Honoring Women of Achievement!

I was proud to be at the Buffalo Branch luncheon on May 3 when two outstanding women were honored for their work. Drs. Barbara A. Nevergold Seals and Peggy Brooks-Bertram founded the "Uncrowned Queens Institute for Research and Education on Women, Inc." in 1999. The original goals were to commemorate the history of African and African American involvement in the Pan American Exposition, held in Buffalo in 1901, and to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of African American women during that period and the one hundred years since then. The project has grown into a major local undertaking and has expanded to other locations, notably playing a significant role in the Oklahoma Centennial celebration. More information is available on their website - http://www.buffalo.edu/uncrownedqueens/.

Kudos to president Tamara Brown for this selection of outstanding achievers!

We wish to express our thanks and appreciation to the Buffalo Chapter of AAUW for recognizing our work in establishing a project that provides not only a model to collect, preserve and share the histories of African American community builders; but the women (and men) community builders of any group. We would welcome opportunities to share our work with women throughout the state and the nation. Again, thank you to Buffalo Chapter AAUW and its president, Tamara Brown, for your support of our efforts and contributions to the history of women who are often lost or forgotten. We wish to thank the Buffalo Chapter of AAUW for recognizing our work and our program to collect, preserve and share the histories of African American women, who are in danger of being lost and/or forgotten. We would welcome the opportunity to speak to other AAUW chapters about this important work and how it can be replicted in their communties. Also, we are interested in exploring how our model can be used by other ethnic groups to commemorate and preserve the histories of their uncrowned queens and kings. Again, we want to thank Buffalo Chapter AAUW and their president, Tamara Brown, for the honor and for their support of our efforts of historical and cultural preservation. Buffalo Chapter AAUW has been one of our enduring supporters, who recognized early on the value of our work. Best regards, Barbara A. Seals Nevergold, PhD
